“Sophie the Giraffe” has been pulled from Toys R Us Canada

I just spoke to a Manager at Toys R Us Canada and they have been notified by their Head Office to pull ‘Sophie’ off their shelves ACROSS CANADA.  The product has been removed from their shelves and is no longer available for purchase.

Health Canada has not issued a recall or product warning but according to the representative at Toys R Us “the product is under assessment and they like to err of the side of caution.” There have been several reports of choking incidents and other toy stores have also pulled the product from their shelves.

    Hi Julia,

Here is the notice that I received from Health Canada. I have also been notified by a parent whose child choked on the toy, and my local toy store has removed the product from their shelves. These are precautionary measures only, and Health Canada has not recalled the product. However, I think it is “news worthy”.
Here is the copy I received from Health Canada.

“There have been a few consumer complaints of incidents involving their children and the use of Sophie the Giraffe. No injuries were reported, however Health Canada is in the process of completing an investigation into the toy. It is Health Canada’s procedure to inform the establishments that sells the product of the complaints and they may decide to remove the product from sale until our investigation is complete. At this time Health Canada has not requested this product to be removed from sale nor initiated a recall.

As part of this on-going investigation, Health Canada is in communication with the manufacturer. Until the investigation is completed, further details cannot be released.

If you would like to be notified of any warnings, advisories and/or recalls initiated by Health Canada, please follow the attached link:

That’s useful info. Even the comments added value. I will think twice before I buy a product, whether its been examined by manufacturers or not.
