What are these things?

August 22nd, 2008 by Cara

I forgot too mention this with my last post so I thought I’d create one all for them!  The last few summers while driving through Maine specifically along Interstate 95 we kept seeing these weird cocoon-like web-like formations on the limbs of many trees.  This year we noticed they aren’t there anymore, but there was many dead trees.  We were wondering if it was due to these cocoons?

Fast forward about 500 miles from Maine and guess what we saw along the side of the road?!  They’rrrrrrrrre HEEEEEERE!

If anyone knows what they are please comment!  I probably should know, but I don’t!

Here’s a few shots!

and a close up, there’s some type of wormy things in there!

K I am a nerd and I was curious so I did a search. It seems they are called “fall webworms”.

They are Tent Caterpillars (I think). New Brunswick was infested with them about 25-30 years ago but at the time a spraying program pretty much wiped them out.

Well the answer of what they are has been given but no one mentioned what to do about them. Unless you want to loose your trees go out with a latter, garbage bags and a broom/brush of some sort and bag them. I found it worked best to take the garbage bag and wrap put it over the branch (depending on placement) and scoop them in. Once collected tie the bag tightly and they will suffocate. There may be a chemical or spray you can get if they are bad but this is the chemical free way. If they are too high may have to find a service to help.
