Cinderella Saturday

Sunday, November 25th, 2007

Getting the kids involved in house cleaning has always been a bit of a challenge, so I stole an idea from another CPO’er (thanks Chel). You can hear more about this in an upcoming Family Night Podcast Chel uses one of their weekend mornings to do some tidying up, then plans a fun family activity for the afternoon once the chores are complete. Well we decided to give it a go and gave out simple chores to the boys, and had Mackenzie watch Finn while Andrew and I did some of the more involved tasks. It seems that the boys took the Cinderella aspect of this to heart that afternoon, and decided to raid Mackenzie’s dress-up clothes. Here’s a few shots of them in their gowns:

Ciaran as Sailor Moon

Ciaran as Cinderella

Even though we didn’t really get a lot of actual cleaning accomplished we still had a fun morning and will probably do one Cinderella Saturday per month. I really like going to our local Market on Saturday mornings and picking up local produce (well as local as it can be this time of year) and an ethnic treat as there are many vendors from all over the world that sell tasty treats in the morning. I must get some photos the next time I’m there! Saint John’s City Market is truly a site to see. It’s actually Canada’s Oldest City Market established in 1876, so if you ever get the chance to visit the city you must check it out!

My Disney Fairytale

Wednesday, November 14th, 2007

As most of you are aware, Walt Disney World holds a special place in my heart for two reasons, my memories there from being a cast member in 1991-92 and it’s also he place that Andrew proposed to me in the Summer of 2002. I decided to share some of our photos from this trip and tell the story of how Andrew had planned this special proposal. We decided that we’d like to take Mackenzie on her first trip to Disney while we were expecting Liam. I was about 5 months pregnant, and knew that we probably not get the chance again for many years, and I knew that at almost 6 years old, she’d really enjoy it. We decided to go for a week in July of 2002. I had everything planned, I joined a site called www.disboards.com as well as a Yahoo mailing list to gather up as many tips I could. I also visited sites like www.allearsnet.com to get info for height restrictions for Mackenzie and which rides I needed to avoid being pregnant. There’s so much info out there and I know this next trip, I will definitely be using these sites again.

So on to my story…I’ll start by setting up what was going on in our lives just before this trip. We just had our offer accepted to by our house, and Andrew was just getting settled back into a new position at work after spending the past three years working for a spin-off company out of Maine in the US. We decided to drive to Bangor, Maine to fly into Orlando, this can be a really good cost cutting measure for anyone that lives close enough to the US border, it usually allows for more flight options as well compared to Canadian Airlines, it unfortunate as I prefer to support Canadian airlines, but living in the city I do, there’s very little inexpensive options. I noticed as we were clearing security at the airport that Andrew seemed oddly nervous, at the time I thought it was because he was carrying so much, Mackenzie’s car seat, our carry on bags, his laptop, but in reality, it was because he had “the ring” in his pocket and was nervous they were going to spoil the surprise!

We spent the our first evening getting settled into the resort, and resting up for the big day, a trip to the Magic Kingdom! For anyone that’s not aware, Walt Disney World (WDW) is divided into 4 different Theme Parks, the Magic Kingdom, Epcot Center, MGM Studios and the Animal Kingdom. There’s also 2 Water parks, a shopping village. and a new addition since I worked there called Downtown Disney. I’m sure I’ve missed a few things, but I digress… So after Mackenzie went to bed, I was reconsidering going to the Magic Kingdom. I had remembered reading that some kinds are so excited by it, and if they go there first the can sometimes be let dwn by the other parks. Andrew then said to me, “No, we’re going there! I want to go there on our first day!” This was completely out of his character, but I figured if he felt this strongly than the Magic Kingdom (MK) it was!

Here’s a few pics of our morning there!

I know this is from a distance, but when zoomed WAY in this is Mackenzie and Andrew on Splash Mountain!

After spending most of the morning and afternoon it started to rain, so we figured that we’d go back to the resort then come back in the early evening so Mackenzie could meet Mickey and we’d stay for the Fireworks. I was pretty cranky I will admit as the rain didn’t stop as I had hoped. We wandered over to the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse and Mackenzie got to give Mickey a great big hug. I didn’t expect this from her at all, but it was so cute. Take a look at us in the second photo we look like drowned rats, it was so wet out!

After we’d met “the Mouse” I figured that was the highlight of the day and asked Andrew if we really needed stay for the fireworks, I mean who really wants to watch fireworks in the pouring rain? He was adamant that we needed to stay, but was acting very strange. We headed over to Cinderella’s Castle, where he said he read about this great place to see the fireworks from, called the “Secret Rose Garden”. This is when I got completely confused! We arrived at this area the was cordoned off, and one of the cast members said, “I, think we’ve been expecting you!” Andrew was looking confused too, so I said to him, I don’t think this is meant for us, we better get out of here, he just had this dumb grin on his face! One we walked down the path, they had a nice little loveseat setup facing Cinderella’s castle, all sheltered from the rain. I’m in shock for a few more minutes thinking we’re crashing someone else’s plans! The cast members, told us to have a seat, and grab a chocolate truffle. Just as the fireworks started, I look over and Andrew is getting down on one knee, and passes me a perfect little glass slipper. Inside it, the most perfect 3 stone diamond ring! Of course my answer was “YES!” (warning the next few photos are a little blurry and Andrew was so nervous he had the camera settings wrong, for the cast member who took the pics)

What made this even more special was that Mackenzie was included in all of this, Andrew made sure that instead of Champagne chilling that they had sparkling cider for both Mackenzie and I, he also had arranged to have a gift for her, a beautiful Cinderella’s Castle Snowglobe as well as her first set of Mickey ears, as we were both wearing our “bride and groom ears”. We ended up being the last people in the park, it was truly magical and something none of us will ever forget!

I love you Andrew!title

Two Birthdays in a Week!

Saturday, November 10th, 2007

I am officially the mom of a 3 year old and 5 year old. Ciaran and Liam both had their birthdays this past week. We ended up having a family dinner to celebrate both birthdays. Liam was a little bit disappointed with this as he wanted his own party with “his friends”. Unfortunately there is a new policy at his Kindergarten this year that the kids are not allowed to send birthday party invitations to school. I understand the reasoning around it, but if your child us a bus student you never get a chance to meet their friend’s parents. I’m hoping at the Parent Teacher Conferences, I can introduce myself to a few of them, and possibly set up a play date some weekend.

For their party I decided to do a turkey dinner with all of the fixin’s, since I didn’t get to do one for Thanksgiving. It was great as it gave us lots of leftovers for the next few days, and I even made a pot of turkey stock to freeze for soup bases, and I made a Turkey Shephard’s Pie to freeze. I’ve mentioned making this before on our “What’s for Dinner” Podcast. I really like it, as I’ll pull it our in a few weeks, and it’s just like having turkey Dinner without all the work!

After dinner, each of the boys had their own cakes. They have been eyeing these cakes at our local grocery
store for the past couple of years, they are real icecream cones around them, (well the icecream is actually icing, but the cones are real!) so I decided to surprise them with these:

It was nice to have both sides of our family together, and gave me a chance to start talking to my dad about a planning a trip to Walt Disney World for the March Break! He is hoping to join us with his boys who are a year older and a year younger than Mackenzie. We were going to wait another year, but with our strong dollar we thought we’d take advantage of it! I’ll be sure to share some of our plans here.

As well, over the next few entries, I thought I’d share some of our favorite travel tips and moments over the past 5 years.

Happy Birthday my sweet boys! Here’s a few pics of them over the years! I will add them from my other PC soon!

October 31, 2007

Today was a day of many costumes. The day started off with Liam getting ready for school, He was not happy at all that he wasn’t allowed to wear his costume. They had a rule this year that the younger kids could not wear costumes. Instead they all dressed in Orange and Black for the day. I understand the reasoning behind it, but the little guy was so excited to get that costume on especially since Ciaran and Finn’s had their costumes on for his party at preschool. I decided to drive Liam and Mackenzie out to their school on the way to Ciaran’s party. In the process my diaper bag/backpack got mixed up with Mackenzie’s school bag and I ended u with her school books and her project that was due that day. She had both digital camera’s that were in my bag. After I got Ciaran settled in I hopped back in the minivan with Finn and headed back across town to school to swap bags. Mackenzie’s friends were giggling, that she had diapers and that I was dressed up. Yes I threw together a quick costume that morning as a “Wacky Witch” wearing Black jeans, an orange long sleeved shirt, orange and black striped leg warmers, and black cape, orange Crocs and to top it all off a bright orange witches hat! Sorry no pics of me! Wink

After getting the bag situation sorted out we headed back to Ciaran’s school for his party. He looked so cute as MickeyMouse, and had a great time at his little party. After we left, since he was in a good mood, I though I would bring up getting a haircut. I have been trying since mid-summer to get it cut. In the past week, he’s been called a girl on 3 different occasions. Well when I asked him he finally agreed! Here are the before and after shots!

After lunch, it was our playgroup’s Halloween Party. Liam joined us afterschool, at this point Ciaran felt his Mickey costume was too warm, so he decided he wanted to wear his “Pumpkin Jammies”. It was a quiet gathering, but the boys had a lot of fun!

So while at playgroup I found out that our local Mall was having a Halloween Trick or Treating Event. When Mackenzie was younger I used to always take her there. I liked that she didn’t have to wear a big bulky costume, and it was nice and warm. Mackenzie dressed up as the new Pokemon Trainer named “Dawn”, Finn was a Racecar, well he was in his old infant carseat with a Nascar Cover, and Liam and Ciaran were dressed as Race Car drivers. Well Liam corrected me each time telling them hr was “Actually, a Monster Truck Driver!”

By the time we arrived home, from the mall it was getting fairly late and we didn’t end up with any Trick or Treaters! I now have 3 boxes of snack sized Pringles! Looks like the kids will be getting them in their lunches for a while!

It was a fun but exhausting day, I felt like I spent the entire day in the van! All worth it though, the kids had a great time!
