Robertson’s Candy: A Canadian Tradition

When you think of your childhood Christmas memories, what comes to mind?  For me, it is family, the dishes of cookies my mom would spread around the house, my Dad’s sock stockings, and RIBBON CANDY!  I can still remember the exact taste and texture of that “ribbon candy” and how special the box looked.

Flash back about twelve years when my daughter was born and I was trying to create a Christmas like my mom did.   My preparations were like most, I wanted to decorate a nice family tree and have a dinner similar to the one my mother had prepared.  I tried to remember every detail right down to the gherkin pickles.  The only thing missing…. Ribbon Candy!  I must admit that the quest to find Ribbon Candy became quite an obsession. Every time I would see ribbon candy I would buy it and taste it and say, “no, that is not the one” - I knew what I was looking for but I couldn’t find it… until last year.  I walked into a specialty candy store in Ontario and there was a box of ribbon candy.  I just new it was the one, so I bought it.  As soon as I opened the box, my childhood Christmas memories came back to me and the taste was just what I remembered it to be.

So, for those of you looking for a piece of your childhood and maybe even this ribbon candy - I would like to introduce to you or re-introduce to you… Robertson’s Candy.

A Canadian Tradition

Robertson’s has been a tradition in Canadian homes at Christmas time since 1928.  The 80 year old company is located in Truro, Nova Scotia and although this company is a big player in the world of Candy, they maintain that personalized, family owned approach we don’t often see today.  Robertson’s makes candy all year round, but it is the holiday season that keeps them the busiest.  Their Premium Thin Ribbon Candy, Satin Mix, and Chicken Bones are three of their most popular candy lines and the Clear Toys (Barley Toys) are also a big hit with kids; you may remember these tasty treats from your childhood.  They still taste as good today!

Now you may be thinking, what makes Robertson’s candy so great?  The texture and taste, it’s as simple as that!  Don’t let the look-a-likes fool you - their taste can’t compare to Robertson’s Candy.  The Ribbon Candy is thin and each piece is a different flavour and the Satin Mix offers a host of delicious flavours and sizes, unlike some of the one flavour Satin Mix candies you find at this time of year.  And the Chicken bones, well the taste and texture is right up their with the best of the best.

Wondering where you can find Robertson Candy?  If you’re lucky, and live outside of the east coast region, you can find their candy in a specialty store, but I would recommend jumping over to East Coast Catalogue where you will find Robertson’s Candy along with a host of other tasty “East-Coast” treats all year long.  And if you really want to see these tasty treats at a store in your area - ask the store manager to consider carrying Robertson’s candy!
